Lamar University

This program offers two tracks: Nursing Education or Nursing Administration. Courses are offered primarily online, full or part-time. The MSN program at Lamar University was ranked fourth in the ten most affordable online MSN Degree programs in 2020.

The University of Texas

This program offers four tracks: Adult- Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist (AG CNS), Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PCPNP), Psych/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program (PMHNP), or Leadership in Diverse Settings (LeaDs). Students can take courses full or part-time. Classes are offered primarily online. Graduates are eligible to sit for an appropriate certification exam.

Typical Curriculum for a Master's in Nursing

MSN programs in the state of Texas are composed of theory courses and practical experience. Clinical hours vary per program. MSN curriculum includes courses on leadership, policy development, nursing research, quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and ethics. Many universities have RN- MSN programs as well as RN BSN- MSN programs.

The Texas Board of Nursing requires that all APRNs choose a population focus. The Board has approved nineteen different population focuses. Nursing Licensure in Texas

The Texas Board of Nursing requires that all APRN applicants first receive a registered nurse license. After attending an undergraduate program approved by the Texas Board of Nursing, registered nurse applicants must earn a passing score on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Texas Registered Nurses may apply for a multi-state license. APRNs may not.
