Nursing Licensure in Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Board of Nursing requires that all APRN applicants first hold an RN license in the state of Wisconsin or hold a multi-state compact license. RN applicants must first attend an undergraduate program approved by the Wisconsin Board of Nursing then earn a passing score on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

Applicants must also become certified as an APRN by the American Board of Nursing Specialties, Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (formerly the National League for Nursing), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the National Commission for Certifying Agencies of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence or any other nationally recognized certification agency approved by the Board. APRN licensure is granted in the following specialties: nurse practitioner, certified nurse−midwife, certified registered nurse anesthetist or clinical nurse specialist. Applicants may also apply for prescribing privileges.
